Impro, Improvisation and the Theatre by Keith Johnstone
Review⌗
Impro is one of those non-fiction books that still manages to come across as something built to entertain. I’m not sure if that is a result of the subject matter or Johnstone’s style, but no matter how you slice it, I had fun reading this book. Most of the status and space related wisdom it has on offer is probably already floating in your head somewhere – Impro’s true value is that it gives you the language to discuss it. The only part of the book that I found to be somewhat off-kilter was the bits on mask-acting. I think that some of the claims and events described are a bit fantastical, and probably clash with modern psychologyI’m not sure about this, though. Despite my skepticism, a quick search found another blog post that discusses effects of mask work very similar to that detailed in Impro. It can be found here, but it was entertaining anyway.
